Ep 001 – Learning To Find Yourself Through Journaling
Mentioned In This Episode:
Hey there, and welcome to the Simply Today Life Podcast. I’m your host Victoria Armijo. Wife, mom of 2 girls, breast cancer survivor, and health coach in training!
This podcast is about encouraging women to start living their best life by finding gratitude and fulfillment in the now. I want women and moms like you to know how they matter, how important your stories are, and how life shouldn’t be about living in survival mode.
I’m here to help you thrive and give you the support you need with simple steps when the solution seems far fetched. It’s up to you to start creating the life you were meant to live.
I want to provide women like you with intentional guidance, support, and inspiration throughout your wellness journey so that you can mindfully create the life you so desire.
I will be opening up honest conversations about creating a healthy lifestyle, the importance of self-care, mindfulness, and learning how to create the space you need to be present with yourself every step of your journey.
Join me weekly and get ready to change your life from the inside out.
Hello, my beautiful ladies! I hope your week has been filled with some goodness and lots of inner self-work.
So I’ve been working behind the scenes on how to be more intentional on what I want to share here on the podcast with all of you and I want to share deep and beautiful things that will help you grow throughout your journey no matter where you are right now.
I know that one of the ways to do this is to start being more vulnerable with all of you and myself. Not only will this expand my own journey in becoming more of my authentic self and a better coach, but it will allow you to see and feel that you’re not alone.
So in today’s episode, I want to start implementing one of the pillars that I believe is essential when you’re doing healing and self-worth work within yourself. And this pillar is about finding your purpose and self-fulfillment. This pillar will touch on so many different subjects like self-worth, embracing yourself fully, and starting to set boundaries with others.
This is why today I wanted to go into this self-worth pillar by starting a conversation about letting go of the person you think you should be and to start becoming the person who is already inside of you.
You see, most of us live on this Earth where it’s about pleasing and becoming what others expect us to be or do. Instead of embodying who we already are, we begin shifting our true essence in the opposite direction of what we are meant to be doing.
We have so many unconscious negative and limiting beliefs that are attaching themselves to us unconsciously and they just built and built until we have completely lost our way and given our power away to others.
I’m going to 100 percent real here and share some of my own experiences in hopes that you can see yourself in them and realize the shifts you can do for yourself to start becoming this full embodiment of yourself.
Because the truth is she is within you, she’s just been shut down, suppressed, and kicked down so many times that she needs the courage to come back out. But it’s time we do the work and it’s going to be hard, but nothing worth living is going to be easy.
So, let’s start today’s conversation on how we can start letting go of the person everyone else believes we should be.
Many of us grow up with a strict list of things we are supposed to do. Graduate from high school, go to college, get a good career at some firm, get married, have kids, and then we turn around and put these expectations on our own kids. But it’s time to break that cycle.
Growing up I was told these same stories, what I wasn’t told was the things that I needed to hear. What I needed to hear I was that I was good enough when I tried, but still failed.
How I should follow my passion even if I later changed my mind because that will only allow me to grow and embark on a new journey or a new path.
What I wasn’t told was that I should do things because it fueled my soul because it fueled my fire. This would have allowed me to live a life of stumbles, lessons, and heartache, but in the end, I would have been living my truth. Instead, I stumbled through lessons, life, and heartache and I hated the person I was becoming.
But that’s not the way our human life works. Instead, most of us learn to suppress our wants, our desires, and our needs for others. We start putting others’ feelings before us.
We graduate high school and go to college to learn something we have no interest in because if we don’t we will hurt our parent’s feelings because it’s what is expect of us or even worse, they would cut us off we don’t’ follow through the story they have created for us.
So you do it anyway and your life begins to fill itself with pleasing others and not knowing when to say no, even if it’s something you don’t’ want to do or doesn’t bring you joy. It becomes a habit. I become about making sure others’ feelings arent’s hurt and in this process, we begin losing our own identity and start living a life of inauthenticity. Without even realizing it.
So subconsciously this entire time you have been told who you should be and what you should do. That is the moment when you finally get fed up with being used, kicked around, and your self-esteem has hit the pinnacle of lows you have no freaking idea what to do. You don’t know where to start or what to believe in. What you do know is, that you’re not happy and you’re fed up feeling fed up!
So what do you do? The first thing when it comes to self-healing and finding your true self is about doing the inner work we all avoid doing. Trust me, It’s the first step into stepping into yourself. Why? Because this entire time no one has asked you what you have wanted, so now that you are asking yourself that question you need to start answering her.
Get a journal and start setting a time daily for you to sit and meditate with your thoughts and your words. There are many types of meditations and when you are doing deep work and opening up your heart with yourself we like to consider this a type of meditation.
Your goal is to start listening to yourself not your thoughts. Listen to what your inner guidance is telling you. Listen to what your heart desires.
If you have a meditation practice in place already you can totally do this journaling along with it if you wish. I like to do them separately as I feel that it takes me out of my alignment when I’m meditating. But you do what feels good to you. I’m just here to guide the way.
So, what are you going to write in your journal? Start by adding the somewhere on top of the page. You want to be able to look back and see how much you have grown into your true self. Then sit down, relax, and take a few deep breaths in and tune into yourself.
Listen to that voice that has quieted down and ask her what she wants? Ask her what she loves to do? Ask her what brings her joy? Then, let it flow. You can also start by writing down ” I feel” and this sometimes can help get the ball rolling if you feel stuck.
I’ve also created a free PDF downloadable Journal Prompts specifically to get you thinking about who you are and what you want. I hope these are helpful and I’ll make sure to add the link in the description box. So head on over and download those for free.
But I want you to remember a few things before you start.
1- be honest with yourself – it’s not going to help you if you’re still hiding behind everything and holding everything in.
2- be kind to yourself – while writing, some big emotions will arise, and we want this but being kind to yourself will bring you back to the present moment. Don’t judge your feelings or what you are writing. Let it out and let it go.
3- be consistent – don’t expect this to work after sitting down once to journal. Be consistent and commit to yourself in doing the work. That is how the change will come. and I promise you, it will come! I am proof of that.
You are a beautiful and amazing soul that is worthy of living her truth and authenticating who you are. So trust in yourself and the process.
There are so many more ways than you can start healing, growing, and becoming your true authentic self. This is one of the ways I found myself and if it calls you to do it, please listen.
I also want to add a quick disclaimer, because I know how these things work coming from the social media world. As a mom and wife, I am happily married and have two beautiful little girls I adore. But I am not those things. They do not define who I am and what I want out of life. They are apart of me and apart of my journey.
So I don’t want anyone listening to think that this is where I’m coming from. I’m coming from a place of losing myself among life and not allowing my true self to come to existence.
I come from a place of pleasing others and never saying my truth. But I have evolved because it wasn’t where I wanted to be. And I only want the same for all the women in the world who want it. Especially those amazing moms who do so much for their families.
I have so much passion when it comes to wellness and living fully and I will always be a student when it comes to my life and my inner work, but now I’m becoming a teacher too which is such an incredible feeling and such a calling for me.
Which in turn, ended up being the person I was this entire time! All of the signs have always pointed me here, I just wasn’t listening. so friend, listen to her, and follow your journey.
